Ok, Abbey’s birthday party is fast approaching and I still  haven’t settled on a cake to make…that is, if I make a cake at all.  I can tell you this, Bob the Builder and Bulldozer cakes are quite popular searches.  I can’t tell you how many people have found my blog by searching those terms.  By the way, there’s a link in my favorite links section for Creative cakes that I believe takes you right to the Bob the Builder cakes.  If not they are easy to find in a search.  I think I’ve abandoned the idea of a Bob cake though.  Abbey still loves to point out “BOB!” everytime we pass a construction vehicle but, I think I’m going to go with a slighly less boyish theme.  I’m leaning towards a Curious George cake.  There are some amazing ones on that Creative cakes site…or I still might do the Raggedy Ann cake I had stumbled upon before I even had Abbey.  Since I love Raggedy Ann and Abbey is not so impressed this may be my last chance to pick the theme of the cake while she doesn’t seem to car LoL.  Ah well, I’ll figure it out.

So, today’s Question of the day:

What was your child(ren)’s last birthday cake/theme?

Ok, so its Friday and I followed my menu plan exactly one day…we had the chicken, noodles and veggies leftovers dish the other night, other than that, we didn’t follow one meal, and the weekend doesn’t look good either…oh well…plans were made to be broken right?  LoL.

So the plan for the weekend is to go to the Bug and Butterfly Festival at Stonykill tomorrow.  They’re supposed to have a tent set up with lots of local butterflies inside so you can go inside and the butterflies fly all around you.  Hopefully I’ll have lots of cute photos to post tomorrow.  That’s the plan, but of course, since we have a plan in place, Something  has to come along to throw a wrench in the works…we’re finally supposed to get Scottie’s car back tomorrow (another long story I’ll save for another time), and today the van starts acting up…overheating and whatnot…sigh…can’t we just have one day of everything going smoothly?  Anyway, hopefully we’ll get to the Butterfly Festival and maybe get some swimming in and then we’ll have to work on the stairs.  So far I’ve gotten three stairs de-stapled and sanded.  At this point I’m just hoping to get one coat of stain on each step before Sunday’s open house…we shall see!

Well, I had my meals for the week all planned out…then Scottie picked me up at work with sandwiches and drinks packed and we had a picnic at the park.   I can’t say that I’m upset that he messed up my meal plan LoL.  So, for the rest of the week, here’s what I’ve got on tap…

Wednesday-  Chicken, Noodles and Veggies ( a combination of leftovers from previous nights)

Thursday- Breakfast for dinner! (Biscuits and Gravy)

Friday- Ravioli

Saturday- Pork Chops and Veggies

Sunday- Ham, mashed potatoes, veggies

The biscuits and gravy is just a can of Pillsbury Grands Biscuits and a can of Sausage Gravy I found at the grocery store…cheating, I know, but I LOVE biscuits and gravy…and you can’t get it anywhere around here, as far as I know.  So if I can find an easy way to make it for myself on a regular basis it’ll be great!  Next time I’ll have to try either the biscuits or gravy from scratch.

As for the stairs…we haven’t run into a disaster like I was expecting, but the upper stairs  have about 10, 000 staples in them (much more than the lower stairs), so the process is going slower than last week.   Hopefully we’ll still be done by Sunday so we can have an open house that day.  We shall see!

Ok, so the pulled pork was delicious!  I was a bit worried when it started cooking and it smelled SO spicy, but it had just a bit of a kick…perfect!  After having it for dinner both Friday and Saturday nights, Scottie and I ate the last of it as a midnight snack on Ritz Crackers Saturday night LoL.  I will definately be making that again.

The stairs:  They are going amazingly well (I keep waiting for some disaster to strike).  The bottom set of stairs are done now and the carpet is ripped up on four of the stairs on the upper set.  My next project will be somewhat smaller I think…I’m looking at knobs and handles and trying to pick one for the kitchen cabinets…here’s the one’s I really like…

They actually sort of match my silverware too LoL!

Let’s see, what else…I havent’ talked about my little one too much lately.  I finally got to see her ‘swim’ on Friday.  My MIL has been telling me how amazing she does in the pool with her tube on (she wears one of those tubes that has an attached tank top type thing so she can’t slip through).  Now, I consider myself a fairly laid back mom.  I’m not too much of a worry wart…except when it comes to the pool.  Nana has a deck that comes right up to the edge of the above ground pool and there’s no fence around it, so for the last three Summers, at every bbq I’ve spent the whole time blocking the entire edge of the pool that comes up to the edge of the deck, which is a considerable length…I just never sit down LoL.  So I’ve been hearing how well Abbey is doing in the pool and I finally got to see her in action.  She really does look like she knows how to swim in that thing.  She actually moves her arms and kicks like she’s swimming and will venture out to the middle of the pool to rescue a toy and drag it back to the edge.  And of course, I’m not the tiniest bit biased LoL.  I really have to get some pictures of her in action.

Ok, I think that’s it.  Oh, I mentioned last week that I should plan meals week by week.  I’m forming a list in my head for this week so I’ll try to get that up tomorrow.

So I’ve been trying to decide what to do for a theme for Abbey’s birthday.  Mainly this affects the cake since I’m thinking of trying to make a cake myself.  I was thinking of doing this cute Castle cake…

…but when we passed the birthday cakes at Shoprite this weekend the one that made Abbey stop and point was the Bob the Builder cake. So much for my visions of a Princess Party LoL. So I’m thinking of trying to make this…

bulldozer cake (the first picture, #19 when you scroll down)…

…but I think I’ll try making a mini version and sit it on top of Dirt cake which is always a hit with the kids. Then I can still order a pretty purple/flowery 1/4 sheet cake for the adults and apease my (and Abbey’s) girly side. Of course, I’ve never attempted a cake like this. The closest I’ve come is the little lamb cake I made for her first birthday party but there wasn’t so much cutting and frosting (the wool on that one was mini-marshmallows)…last year I didn’t attempt a cake on my own, I just got a bigger one from Wal-Mart. So, we shall see!

I’m also getting goodie bags together. I picked up some non-Easter themed toys and things on clearance after Easter like little card games (old maid, crazy 8’s ect), maze puzzles, a bucket of sidewalk chalk so each kid gets a couple of pieces, and little containers of Play-Doh. I’m going to look for a bag of Play-Doh tools and/or cookie cutters to put in with the clay and I saw a suggestion to put in a freezer pop…the kind you buy as liquid and freeze yourself, so they can bring it home and freeze it there. I thought that was a good idea. Other than that I’ll probably throw in some candy and be done with it. Of course all this doesn’t take place for another two months (two months from today to be exact), so I’ve got time.

And I mean that quite literally!  We’ve been trying to sell our house for months now, on and off.  For the most part its in good shape but I’m pretty sure one of the reasons its taking so long is the horrendous carpet we have throughout the whole house…a dark maroon carpet with more than its share of worn spots.  So, we’ve decided to pull the carpet off the stairs, sand the drips of paint off and stain them.  It doesn’t sound like a huge project but for this decidedly Non-DIY girl its quite an undertaking.  I start tomorrow and will hopefully have at least a few steps done by the end of the weekend…wish me luck :)!  I’ll post a before picture tomorrow.
